THE WORKCAMP

Kampung Bukit Mat Daling, Ulu Tembeling, Jerantut, Pahang

Located almost at the end of Ulu Tembeling, this village is not a famous living area except for anglers. It is located deep inside the jungle, further upper side of National Park in Pahang.

How To Get There

Group travel will be organized from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Tahan by bus. The journey by bus will take about 3 hours. Then, we need to travel by boat from Kuala Tahan to Ulu Tembeling, will take around 4 – 7 hours, depending on water level along the way. Be prepared to get off the boat and push your boat through shallow water. It is expected that during this trip, the river will be very shallow and you need to do a lot of pushing.

You will be amaze with green and beautiful jungle during the journey. Most of the area is protected under National Park. Normally we can see birds, 'orang asli' villages and water buffalo.

Clothing

Extra clothing (summer) is advisable. There is no laundry facility. You have to wash you own cloth at the river. You should bring light sleeping bag or rather sleeping mat. It is important to observe decent dress code while in the village. Short skirt is not advisable. Rain coat, flashlight, boot, cap or hat and sun block lotion are advisable to bring.

Finances

US$ 1 = RM2.94, €1 = RM4.23

Just bring enough cash, not too much, as most part of the program is taken care off. All major credit cards are accepted in eateries, shopping complexes, and banks. Foreign exchange outlets can be found in many complexes in Kuala Lumpur and Pahang, so your traveler’s cheques may come in handy. It is customary for Malaysian to offer to pay for meal, to show a good will to their guests. An honest “terima kasih”(thank you) will suffice.

Culture

Malaysia is a multiracial country. Word of precaution, our participants will stay in Malaysian houses, meaning that, you should take of your shoes before entering their houses. Please bring along toilet paper, as Malaysian toilet do not have toilet roll, but plenty of water. Malaysian foods are rather spicy, so please be prepared to eat curry and spicy stuff, or bring your packed food. Some of our local participants are Muslims, so non halal meat and alcohol is prohibited to them. Hugging or kissing of opposite sex is not proper.

Souvenir

It would be nice if participants can bring some souvenirs to exchange with our participants and foster families.

Evening

Almost every evening session will have a discussion and presentation by different groups. Active participation from everyone is expected. You make focus on any issue you think appropriate. Our intention is to expose our participants with new ideas and vision on voluntarism through out the work camp.

Security

We have taken precaution measures to ensure security of our participants. However please consult your team leaders or secretariat if you are going away from your main group. Some slots and evenings are left free for participants to mingle around or to have evening out with friends. However, participants must return to their assignment house before 10 pm.

For those arriving early or wish to stay longer, please let us know if you need our assistance arranging your accommodation, etc.

Others

Villagers in Kampung Bukit Mat Daling living in a simple life, eating basic food (rice with fish and vegetables). We cannot aspect more than that as they live far from town. Nearest town is Jerantut, 80km from Kuala Tahan, about half day journey from Kampung Bukit Mat Daling. If we are lucky, we can taste various kind of fruits.
